December performing season has arrived!  Here is a review of performance expectations to  help students keep on top of this very busy schedule.  For printable versions of each choir's performance calendar, click on one of these links:
You may also check the online master calendar for an overview of all performances, including our upcoming Madrigal Dinner and Holiday Concert, coming up on Monday, December 14.  Ticket information and other specifics on Madrigal Night will be sent home with students within the next several days.

Monday, November 9, 2009

Lots of things are coming up for our department, and I will be working on getting the Upcoming Events calendar updated as our schedule of performances starts to solidify.
In the meantime, our students all have the opportunity to attend a free matinee performance of the UN-L Opera version of Our Town at Kimball Recital Hall on Thursday afternoon.  Details for this event were given to students in the form of a handout today, so you should have this information at home tonight.  It is important to know that students will not be excused to attend the opera if they have not brought in all of the paperwork that has been assigned to them since the beginning of the school year.  In case the forms have been misplaced, I have just created a new "Forms and Info" page on this site.  Everything that needs to be turned in at this point can be viewed and downloaded from the Forms and Info page.
Remember that there is a concert at 7:00pm this Wednesday in our auditorium, featuring Knight Sounds, Countesses and Noblemen, Ars Nova, and Court Choir.  Originally we had planned a pancake feed for this evening, but the pancake man has since become unavailable, so do not come early for pancakes.  There will be pieces of pie for sale after the concert, however, so please stay and enjoy some fellowship with other parents, students, and staff.  We hope to see many of you there!

Sunday, May 17, 2009

It's getting close to the end of the year, and our final concert, "A Little Knight Music", is coming up this Thursday, May 21.  Students have been given handouts with information about events and business to take care of over the next few weeks.  In case that sheet didn't quite make it home, you can access the information here.  We hope to see everyone at the concert Thursday!

Happy Spring Break!  "The List" is now online so that everyone can see who will be in which choirs next year.   All of the groups look exceptionally good, so congratulations to everyone who's been selected for a choir!
Happy traveling to Queen's Court and Court Choir next week, as they are taking their long-awaited trip to Chicago.  Be safe and have a great time!
   See you all next quarter!

Sunday, February 1, 2009

December performance pics are finally online, including Maggie Wallace's high quality shots of our Madrigal dinner and concert!
Second semester is in full swing now, with several choirs getting ready for major performances and/or competitions.  Don't forget to come to the first show in our newly remodeled Jennifer Dorsey Howley Auditorium, The ChoirThe Choir is a play about being in a high school choir, and how the experiences and friendships you find along the way will affect the rest of your life.  Many of our vocal music students are involved in both speaking and singing roles, so you will not want to miss this important event in the history of Lincoln Southeast!  Shows are at 7:30 pm February 12, 13, and 14 in the new auditorium.  You can leave your portable seat cushions at home this time!

Saturday, December 6, 2008
December performance dates are now available both on our calendar and in a by-class format.  We have two busy weeks of performing left!
Remember that our Madrigal Dinner and Holiday Concert are on December 15th at Sheridan Lutheran Church.  The dinner starts at 5:30, and the concert at 7:00.  Look for information to come home about purchasing tickets for these events.  You won't want to miss this very special night!
I will be taking pictures at many of our upcoming performances to share in our photo galleries.  As always, anyone with pictures to share is encouraged to send them to me either by email or on a CD.  In the meantime, here are some completely unrelated pictures that will either make you laugh or feel really sorry for me (maybe both)!  Merry Christmas!

Sunday, November 2, 2008

Welcome to the first update of the 2008-9 school year!  We've finished our first quarter and are heading into a busier season.  I've entered some upcoming dates into our online calendar, and will continue to enter performances as they get scheduled.
We held our first concert of the year on October 7, featuring Bel Canto, Excalibur, Queen's Court, and Singing Knights.  Michael Yang has shared his pictures from the evening; you can find them in our Photo Galleries.  Thanks, Mike!
If you have any pictures, suggestions, or other contributions for this site, please send them to me, either by email, or on CD.  Thanks!

Friday, June 13, 2008

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer vacation so far.  I've had time to upload some new pics from 2007-2008 concerts that Cassie Bachman's mom, Eva, shared with me, and there are some really good ones.  Check them out in the Photo Galleries

A note about pictures:  for website posting, I generally crop and resize photos into a more manageable size.  In many cases, I still have the original, higher definition files on my computer or on CD.  If you ever find a picture that you like on the site, but would like a nicer version for printing or other personal use, send me an email and I'll see if I still have the original file.
For 10-12 graders who are interested in going through the All-State Choir audition next fall:  you can pick up packets of music at Dietze at any time and get a head start on learning the audition pieces.  No need to wait until school starts again and your lives get busier!

Sunday, May 18, 2008

Our last batch of Featured Students for this school year is now online.  If you haven't been keeping up with these, I strongly encourage you to browse on over and read what these students are up to.  Everyone who has been featured this year still has a bio online for your reading pleasure.  If you liked the Featured Student pages this year, feel free to drop me a line so I know if I should do it again next year.
In the meantime, I've put a couple of pictures from the Singing Knights concerts up in the Photo Galleries.
Also, don't forget that our Spring Concert, "A Little Knight Music" is this Tuesday at 7:00 PM at Kimball Recital Hall on the UN-L Campus (just north of 11th and Q).  The location is a change from our original calendar, so don't go to Wesleyan!  Tickets can be purchased during both lunches on Monday and Tuesday, and will be available at the door if you don't mind waiting in line for them.  Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children.  See you there!

Monday, April 14, 2008

I finally got my hands on questionnaires for April's Featured Students, so they are now up for your reading pleasure.  Enjoy!  Also, I've got a few more pictures in the photo galleries, featuring students in Ars Nova, C&N, and Singing Knights.
Also, while I'm here, I may as well mention that Court Choir performed at the LPS Choral Contest this afternoon.  They gave a top notch performance and came away with Superior ratings from all three judges, which is the best result possible.  Congratulations, Court Choir!  They have been working extremely hard, so the honor is much deserved!

Thursday, March 20, 2008

Happy Spring Break!  "The List" is now online so that everyone can see who will be in which choirs next year.  As you're looking at the lists, keep in mind that next year is a trip year for Queen's Court and Court Choir.  We haven't decided where we'll go yet, but it will most likely be a large city on one of the coasts.  In any case, it's a great year to be a member of a large varsity group!
Have a safe and relaxing Spring Break--we'll be working hard when we get back, so get your sleep in now!

Wednesday, March 19, 2008
Only one more day until Spring Break, and that means it's time to post lists for next year's choirs!  The lists will be posted here tomorrow, March 20 at about 3:00 PM.  For more information, please click on our helpful "Looking at the List" page.  See you back tomorrow!

Sunday, March 2, 2008

It is a new month, and that means it's time for another group of Featured students!  Also, there are a few new pictures in the Photo Galleries of C&N enjoying some down time in class.
That's all for now.  Don't forget that the LSE Musical, Dames at Sea, is coming up soon!  Check out our calendar for information about the musical and other upcoming events,

Sunday, February 11, 2008

Nope, I haven't forgotten to put up another group of Featured Singers!  I'm extremely slow this month, but I'm sure you'll find that this group is worth the wait!
There are also just a few of pics added to our Photo Galleries page:  one of our participants in the Singing Youth of Nebraska festival, and two of C&N on their way to Northwest Missouri State.  Enjoy!
It's a busy time for us lately, as we've been working on auditions for next year's groups, casting and starting work on our musical (Dames at Sea), auditioning for Night of Knights and Benefit Knight, and preparing for competitions and the upcoming All City Solo and Small Ensemble Contest (February 16 at Southwest all morning, in case you care to attend and support our students).  Also, our vocal music staff has been moving into our new offices in the partially completed new music wing.  If you find yourself at Southeast, stop by and take a peek at how the construction is going.  It's noisy and dusty, but progress is definitely being made!

Sunday, January 6, 2008
It's January, and that means it's time for another batch of Featured Singers!  It's another great group this month, so be sure to check them out!
Also, I've uploaded a few pics that have been shared by students and their families.  These particular photos are of C&N's trip to Peru State College and of last month's Madrigal Dinner.  Go to the Photo Galleries page to see them, and remember that I'm always thrilled to post any pictures that you want to share (either email them to me or bring them to me on CD)!

Saturday, December 29, 2007

I hope everyone is having a great holiday break!  Remember that auditions for the LSE Musical, Dames at Sea, begin on Thursday, the day we come back from break.  Prepare a 2-3 minute song and sign up on the auditorium door ASAP.
In the meantime, I've finally gotten the rest of the December performing pics up, including the Madrigal Dinner and Concert.  There are a lot of them!  Go to the Photo Galleries to see them.
Also, be sure to check out new additions to our Videos page.  These are great for sharing with far away relatives who can't make it to your performances!

Sunday, December 9, 2007
We're about halfway through our December performing season, and I've just uploaded a batch of pictures to the Photo Galleries.  I've also added four new videos to our Youtube page, featuring Singing Knights, Bel Canto, Knight Sounds, and C&N.  Enjoy!
I've also updated the Calendar and December Performing Schedules to reflect any additions or other changes to the rest of our performing schedule.

Tuesday, December 4, 2007
December's Featured Singers are now posted on our Featured Singers page!  Aren't you dying to know which students are being honored this month?
Also, don't forget to buy your tickets to the Madrigal Dinner (details below).  Tickets are only being sold through the rest of this week, so be sure not to get left out of this very special event!
Another treat:  I've just received and posted pics of Bel Canto's trip to the Kansas City Renaissance Festival this fall.  Go to the Photo Galleries to see them!

Monday, November 26, 2007
It's almost December, and that means that our choirs have been busy preparing music for a whole bunch of Holiday performances!  Performing schedules for the month for every choir can be found here, and all performances are also listed on our Master Calendar.  This will be a very busy month for vocal music students and teachers.  For more information on what is expected this month and how to keep up with things, please read our Performance Guidelines Review page.  Good luck!
Also please note that the Madrigal Dinner and Holiday Concert are coming up soon (Monday, December 17), and that tickets for the Madrigal Dinner are currently on sale for $12 (adults) and $6 (12 and under).  If you want tickets, send payment with your student as soon as possible, as seating is limited.  Admission to the Holiday Concert is free this year, with a suggested donation to the Food Bank.  The dinner will be from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, and the concert will begin at 7:30.

Tuesday, November 6, 2007
I'm a little late this month, but I have put a new batch of students on our  Featured Singers page.  It's another great group of kids, so be sure to head on over and check them out!  Also, there are some new pictures in the Photo Galleries--pictures of Countesses and Noblemen at the Peru State Music Festival.  Enjoy!
Don't forget that there is a concert this Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Auditorium at 7:00.  This concert will feature Knight Sounds, Ars Nova, Countesses and Noblemen, and Court Choir.  Admission is free, and the kids are excited to show everyone what they've been working on.  See you there!
More accolades for our students:  two of our freshmen, Lisabeth Wissink and Nathan Hunt, have been selected to participate in the "Singing Youth of Nebraska" Honor Choir.  Competition for these slots was rough, and only about 100 students throughout the state made the cut, so we are very proud of our two honorees.  Congratulations, Lisabeth and Nathan!

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

Hope everyone is having a great fall break!  Countesses and Noblemen are off to a music festival at Peru State College today, so not everyone is resting.  Please remember that there is a concert on Thursday, November 8, involving Ars Nova, Countesses and Noblemen, Court Choir, and Knight Sounds.  The concert will be in the Southeast auditorium at 7:00.
Several of our students recently auditioned for the All-State Honor Choir, to be held at the Nebraska Music Educators Association Convention in November.  The results of the selection process are in, and the following LSE students have been chosen to participate:
and Alternates (will participate if anyone in their voice part has to drop out):
Congratulations to all of these students, and to all of our other students who prepared so diligently for the audition!

Monday, October 1, 2007
It's a new month, and that means it's time to feature a new group of our exceptional students!  October's featured singers are Cassi Collicott, Steffan Decker, Helen Strotman, and Erich Gebers.  Click on Featured Singers to find out more about these wonderful people!
Don't forget that our first concert of the year is coming up fast.  Next Monday, October 8, at 7:00, Singing Knights, Queen's Court, Excalibur, and Bel Canto will be performing in the LSE auditorium.  To prepare for that concert, all classes will be going over our Concert Etiquette 101 sheet, which helps to make our concerts more enjoyable for everyone.  Parents are also encouraged to review this information, especially if they are new to attending choir concerts.

Monday, September 10, 2007
By now, all vocal music students should have brought home copies of our department's "Choral Expectations" sheet.  The information included on these sheets has been discussed in all classes.  We encourage parents to review the expectations sheet along with their students, then return the bottom portion of the third page, signed and dated.  In addition, the fourth page (Permission for field trips) needs to be filled out and signed so that your student can participate in performances that take them out of school.  Everyone needs to sign the top half of the form, and parents who want to allow their students to drive themselves and/or classmates to performances also need to fill out the bottom half.  Driving students also need to bring us a copy of their auto insurance card.
For everyone's convenience, this paperwork is also available online by clicking here.  This is a printable file in .pdf format.  Hope this helps!  This paperwork is all due to be handed in by Wednesday, September 12.

Monday, September 3, 2007
Today is your lucky day!  Not only have I updated the Meet the Staff page to include our newest teacher, Mr. Scheele, but also I'm introducing a brand new feature to our website!  Starting this month, we will be showcasing four LSE singers every month on our Featured Singers pages.  Up for September:  Dylan Mason, Kasey Bose, Mike Raymer, and Amy Puckett.  These are great students, and I hope you enjoy reading about them!

Thursday, August 23, 2007

Attention, parents!  Please mark next Monday, August 27th on your calendars.  The LSE vocal music staff and Choral Boosters are inviting you to the:
    Choral Boosters Dessert Night!
Monday, August 27th at 7:00 PM
At LSE in the new music room, #M111
(Located near the Prasch entrance by the training room)

Please bring your favorite dessert to share, see the new music room and meet other parents, and hear about how you can get involved in our Choral Boosters Organization.  Drinks will be provided.

Monday, August 20, 2007

Welcome back to school!  The bad news is that we're still dealing with construction throughout the building.   The good news is that our new vocal music room is ready for use and is fully air conditioned!  Six of our eight choirs will be rehearsing in the new room, which is situated where the wrestling room used to be (hallway leading to upper Prasch).  Music staff offices are still in the old M hallway, and M101 will still be in use for some classes and activities.
You should have all received copies of this year's Performing Arts Department calendar.  For your convenience, I have added all of our vocal music events to our online calendar at Upcoming Events.  I will continue to try to keep this calendar updated as events are added and changed.
Anyone who would like to help maintain and improve the lsechoir website should come and talk to Julie.  Let me know how you'd like to help, and I'll happily put you to work.  There would most likely be letter points in it for you, as well!
We're glad to have you all back, and are looking forward to another excellent year of Southeast Vocal Music!

Saturday, May 19, 2007
I've finally found time to upload pics from Court Choir and Queen's Court's trip to Toronto.  There are a lot of them!  You can enjoy them in the Photo Gallery.  While you're there, check out pics of Ars Nova, C&N, and Knights Sounds at last weekend's University Place Arts Festival.
This Tuesday, May 22, is our final concert, "A Little Knight Music".  The concert will be held at Nebraska Wesleyan's O'Donnell Auditorium (same as last year) and will start at 7:00 PM.  Doors will open at 6:30.  Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $7 for adults and $5 for students, with free admission for children under 5.
FYI, all vocal music students need to be at O'Donnell at 6:00 to rehearse the combined choir finale.  Also, please be prepared to stay after the concert for formal group pictures.

Vocal Department News:  Tuesday, March 22, 2005
Welcome to our brand new vocal music website!  We hope our students and their families will find this site to be a helpful resource.  Our website team will be working over the next few months to add features to the site that will help you keep on top of our department events, and also to help you get to know more about our staff and students.   We are proud of our department, and are excited to be able to share our news in the most dynamic way possible!

Thank you for your support!
